Throughout the ages, humanity has sought the favor of deities to ease and enhance their existence. Life presents us with many uncontrollable situations, driving people to seek help from higher powers. Some individuals gain strength through the worship of gods and goddesses, while others turn to spirits, harnessing power through dark rituals. This invocation of malevolent forces is known as black magic.
In India, there exists a place renowned as a bastion for Tantriks and black magic. While the practice of black magic spans the globe, Bengal and Mayong are particularly notable for their deep-rooted traditions in this dark art. Mayong, in particular, stands out as a hub where black magic has flourished over centuries. Here, generations have dedicated themselves to mastering these mystical practices, making it the epicenter of black magic development.
The name Mayong originates from the word "Maya," which means illusion, a fitting name for this mystical region. Mayong is also mentioned in Hindu mythology, specifically in the Mahabharata. According to legend, Bhima's son Ghatotkacha, who fought in the Mahabharata war with many powers, derived his supernatural abilities from his spiritual practices in Mayong.
Even today, renowned tantriks seek refuge in the forests of Mayong to gain immense powers. In Mayong, the knowledge of black magic is passed down orally through generations. This wisdom has never been documented, as the ancestors feared that written records could fall into the wrong hands. The area is teeming with tantriks and sorcerers. Until a few years ago, people were afraid to pass through Mayong due to the numerous chilling stories associated with it. Tales of people disappearing without a trace, tantriks transforming individuals into animals, and controlling wild beasts abound. Locals claim to have witnessed these phenomena during the times of their fathers and grandfathers.
One notable historical incident recounts that when Muhammad Shah and his army attempted to invade Mayong, the locals used their black magic powers to make over 100,000 horsemen vanish. Additionally, in 1667, Emperor Aurangzeb ordered the Mughal general Raja Ram Singh to lead a campaign against the Ahoms in Assam. However, Raja Ram's troops were reluctant to engage due to the infamous black magic of Mayong. Under pressure, Raja Ram led his army into battle but faced a devastating defeat. Raja Ram disappeared without a trace following this defeat. According to the people of Mayong, black magic played a significant role in this war, which is why no army could withstand them.
Excavators have also visited Mayong, and during their digs, they discovered daggers that were once used for human sacrifices. To this day, Mayong is reputed to be a place where human sacrifices are performed to appease powerful forces. Villagers recount tales of their ancestors, who, through such sacrifices, gained extraordinary abilities like flying and becoming invisible. Besides the tantriks, Mayong is home to many healers who claim to cure diseases with their knowledge, and some individuals assert they can locate lost items using their powers.
However, not all uses of these powers are benevolent. Some have used their abilities for malevolent purposes, such as controlling others and causing harm. It is believed that tantrik women could enchant passing travelers with mantras, turning them into lifelong slaves. Despite their immense powers, the practitioners of Tantra in Mayong admit they cannot influence natural phenomena like rain, storms, earthquakes, or floods.
Researchers have frequently ventured to Mayong to uncover the truth behind these claims but have neither found concrete evidence nor been able to refute the stories. Today, many sorcerers in the village can still demonstrate the power of their mantras. Villagers claim these sorcerers can summon and enslave spirits.
The village boasts numerous artifacts and mythological books that provide insights into black magic. Additionally, strange, indecipherable inscriptions adorn many walls in the village. Because of Mayong's enigmatic history, it is gradually becoming a tourist destination. Visitors from far and wide come to explore its secrets.
