It's a common depiction to see Goddess Durga seated atop a lion in various images, prompting the question of why she is portrayed in this manner. So today, we shall delve into the fascinating narrative of how the lion came to be associated with Maa Durga as her chosen vehicle.

According to a religious legend, Mother Parvati undertook years of penance to attain Lord Shiva as her consort. Eventually, she succeeded in finding Lord Shiva, but the intensity of her penance left her complexion significantly darker. One day, in a playful jest, Lord Shiva playfully referred to Mother Parvati as Kali. This remark deeply hurt Mother Parvati, leading her to leave Kailash and seek solace in the forest, where she engaged in rigorous penance.

Mother Parvati resolved to persist in her penance until she regained her beauty. As time flowed by, her unwavering devotion led to a moment when Lord Shiva manifested before her. He bestowed his blessings upon Mother Parvati, restoring her fairness, and then gracefully departed.

Subsequently, Mother Parvati noticed a lion seated before her, its gaze fixed upon her with unwavering attention. She was struck by the peculiar fact that the lion did not display any aggression towards her. Guided by her divine intuition, Mother Parvati sensed that this lion had been a silent observer throughout her penance. Filled with compassion and gratitude, she extended her blessings to the noble beast and welcomed it into her service, designating it as her divine vehicle. From that moment onward, she came to be known as Maa Sherawali.
