Lord Shiva, with his boundless magnificence and benevolence towards his devoted followers, encompasses a vast and all-encompassing presence. Though Ravana was known for his malevolence, one remarkable contribution emerged from his existence—the Shiva Tandava Stotra. Among the numerous compositions dedicated to the worship and adoration of Lord Shiva, the Shiva Tandava Stotra holds a special place in his heart. Revered above all other Stotras, it is a cherished offering that resonates deeply with the divine essence of Lord Shiva.
According to the teachings of astrology, the recitation of the Shiva Tandava Stotra brings forth remarkable fruition in appeasing Shiva and receiving his divine blessings, which are truly extraordinary in nature. The potency of Shiva Tandava Stotra is truly remarkable, as demonstrated by Ravana himself, who obtained exceptional grace and powers from the revered Lord of Kailash through its recitation.
Creation of Shiva Tandava Stotra
Following his triumph over Kuber, Ravana ascends the celestial Pushpak Viman, which eventually comes to a halt before the majestic Mount Kailash. Ravana realizes that this towering mountain is increasingly impeding his progress and therefore, he halts his movement to ponder the situation. In a swift attempt to displace the mighty Kailash, Ravana finds himself confronted by the imposing presence of Nandi (in Vanara form), who steadfastly thwarts his ambitious endeavor. In response, Ravana derides Nandi, likening him to a Vanara and commanding him to vacate his path. In a retaliatory act, Nandi casts a curse upon Ravana, foretelling that he and his kingdom shall face destruction at the hands of Vanaras.
Despite Nandi's warnings, Ravana stubbornly persists and manages to raise Mount Kailash, albeit slightly. However, the moment Shiva gently places his toe on the ground, Ravana's hands are instantly crushed beneath the immense weight. Consequently, an agonizing shriek escapes Ravana's lips, resonating with great intensity. Interestingly, it is worth noting that Ravana was not bestowed with this name at the time of his birth. In the midst of this harrowing ordeal, his agonizing roars resonate so profoundly that he earns the name Ravana, as it aptly signifies the essence of his thunderous cries. The true meaning of Ravana is "roaring," a befitting representation of his resounding pain.

In a remarkable display of devotion and creativity, Ravana, by removing his head and fashioning his veins into strings, creates a Rudra Veena, an instrument of divine melodies. In this profound act, he offers reverential praise to the divine, which has come to be known as the Shiva Tandava Stotra in contemporary times.
