This Bloodiest River In Peru Is Famous For Its Incredible Red Water

You might be aware of many incredible unique rivers, about which some beliefs are prevalent, like somewhere a river is known to have reversed the direction of its flow, and somewhere a river is considered cursed. Also, most of the waters of the rivers you have seen must be muddy, green, or sky blue. But, do you know there exists a river whose watercolor is as red as blood, hence it is known as the Bloody River and locally known as Pukamayu. In the Quechua language, 'puka' means red, and 'mayu' means river.

This bloody river flows through the region of Cusco, Peru. Looking at its water, it seems like someone has shed a lot of blood in the river, which sometimes also gives it a very scary appearance. The red river attracts a massive crowd of tourists with thousands of people arriving each day to see and touch the water. According to scientific study, the area through which this river flows is rich in minerals, and especially the amount of iron oxide is quite high. During the rainy season, the soil containing iron oxide dissolves in large quantities in the river water, and due to the erosion of the soil, the color of the river turns from muddy brown to red, giving it a spectacular appearance amidst the green grass nearby.

This fascinating sight of the Red River can be experienced only during the monsoon months and in the rest of the months the flow of water remains slow and the color of the 'river' persists with a sort of muddy brown tinge. Earlier, when science had not progressed so much and people did not know the scientific reason behind the red water of the river, then everyone was frightened of this river. Even, the locals used to call this river as Devil's River and were afraid to go near it after sunset. However, ever since science has revealed the reason for its red water, the illusion of the people has been broken and now the fear about this river has completely gone away from their minds.
