We have often seen rivers or lakes flowing over the land or running downhill, so it becomes difficult for us to imagine lakes or rivers can even be found in the ocean which is an enormous form of water. But in reality, there is a deep and tranquil natural pit, or sinkhole named "Cenote Angelita" on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula region of Mexico, presenting an incredible scenic view of a beautiful river flowing underneath. Simply put, it's an underwater world in itself. The name "Cenote Angelita" translates to “little angel”. This underwater river looks so incredible that it resembles somewhere with a painting or a scene from a science fiction movie.
A photographer Anatoly Beloshchin who is also a scuba diver went under this sinkhole to capture the views of the underneath hidden environment but his amazement at what he saw knew no bounds. Below they saw that leaves were scattered all around and some trees were standing, some were fallen, along with a river flowing underneath, which was presenting a sight like a mysterious forest in appearance. In fact, this sinkhole was formed from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes water currents underneath, in which both fresh groundwater and saltwater were mixed.

Over time, the organic matter kept going down and decomposed, due to this, a thin layer of hydrogen sulfide was formed there, separating the fresh water above due to the different densities of the saltwater below. This hydrogen sulfide layer is called "Halocline" which looks like a thick mist. Although Cenote Angelita is safe for swimming, but if one goes 30 meters farther down, he started seeing this underground river as it exists 33 meters below the upper surface of the sinkhole, carrying an excess of toxic gas.

These underwater rivers are separated from freshwater by a thin layer of hydrogen sulfate, and such rivers are so salty and toxic that it is difficult to live in them except for a few selected creatures. Rather than this, many spectacular underwater rivers have been found in other places across the globe as well.
