In Japanese folklore, a creature named Amabie became quite popular recently, which is considered to be a supernatural being, with a mixture of a human, fish, and bird. Amabie is usually depicted as a mythical Japanese mermaid. Its body is basically that of a fish and it has long hair, but its human face also has a bird-beak-like mouth. Amabie has three legs or tail-fins with the help of which it can move very fast and also, it glows with a bright light that can be seen from the shore.

The Amabie legend originated in the 19th century during the Edo period in Japan when an Amabie emerged from the sea, with a glow all around and blessed people with good harvests, fish yields, and freedom from disease in the coming years. She instructed the villagers to make copies of her likeness and keep it with them, by doing so they would be safe from any natural calamity or illness. In recent times, Amabie's popularity increased a lot in Japan during COVID as on social media people shared its sketches with each other and prayed to Amabie to protect them.

It is believed that the picture of Amabie itself has protective qualities, and it also helps in fighting against diseases. Many illustrators and artists take inspiration from Amabie to work on their artwork, as it is considered good luck in Japan. Amabie is not considered evil at all, because till date it has not harmed anyone. In Japanese folklore, Amabie is considered a sacred symbol and according to people, even today Amabie is equally active and continues to help people.
