In exceptionally cold regions, freak atmospheric conditions can sometimes combine to produce perfect circles of ice, known as Spinning Ice Disks. This is a natural phenomenon that scientists only have theories about, although the phenomenon is not fully understood. So far, these mysterious ice discs have been seen in many places around the world. Ice discs are mainly seen in the river's water, where they keep rotating slowly in the same spot. If talks about the cause behind their spinning motion, according to the researchers, these ice discs keep rotating with the help of temperature changes and river currents.
Scientists have proven that river currents do help in the formation of such discs initially, but it is the change in temperature that causes them to rotate. Warm water is less dense than cold water, so as the ice melts and sinks, it creates a vortex beneath this disc that causes it to spin. Now if we talk about the largest ice disc, one such ice disc was seen in Presumpscot River in Westbrook, Maine in 2019, which spans about 300 feet across and looked as if the moon had descended into the river. People there call it the "Duck Carousel". This is a rare natural process, which is visited by a large number of tourists.

Ice circles occur usually during cold climates in slow-moving water and may vary in size. Generally, this process takes place in a river where water circulates round. The cold air keeps freezing the water and it goes on becoming a disc. The middle part of the disc rotates slowly, so water freezes quickly there. The edge parts solidify later, but they go around and join in and make a big circle. These revolving discs of ice are spotted in many rivers of the world during the winter season. It was first seen in 1895 on the Mianus River, and was nicknamed "a revolving ice cake".
