Did you know a strange sight in a vast prairie near Olympia, Washington state had been puzzling scientists for decades? In fact, numerous grass-covered round bulges protruded from the ground there, and when viewed from the sky, they looked just like bubble wrap. In the picture below, you can see thousands of grass-covered natural mounds coming together to form an incredible sight. Their size may range in diameter from 3 to more than 50 m and in height from 30 cm to greater than 2 m. Some say these were created by earthquakes and others say aliens made them. But now the question arises as to how exactly these mounds were formed.

Ever since Mima mounds were discovered, i.e. since 1841, it was first understood that these are Native American burial sites, but when they were dug, no evidence of human remains was inside. In addition, it was estimated that due to earthquakes and floods, these structures would have been formed. Apart from these, 50 other theories also surfaced, but no one could prove anything. But scientists have now claimed to uncover the secrets of mima mounds as new research has claimed that tiny burrowing creatures are its architects. Geologist "Gabet," says he's pretty sure these little burrowing creatures such as gophers are responsible for these mysterious Mima mounds.

Using a computer program, the researchers showed how these creatures pile up the soil as they dig beneath the surface. They found that to avoid moisture in waterlogged areas, these creatures push the soil up to stay high and dry above wet ground. They moved soil and pebbles upward, forming a mound. Over the course of hundreds of years, these mounds grew even larger with the efforts of many generations of these creatures. But these special species of creatures are mostly spread in North America, while such mounds are found all over the world except Antarctica.
