Due to the geological upheaval, some mysterious and surprising incidents keep happening on Earth from time to time. One such incident took place in the desert of Tunisia in 2014 when a large lake appeared overnight in the middle of the desert, which had not existed before. Yes, it would be correct to say "appeared", because where earlier there was only sand, turquoise water started appearing overnight, creating the illusion of a mirage. Even for people, it must have been such an amazing experience as one moment there was nothing but scorching sand and the next, a vast expanse of turquoise water appeared.
However, the reason for the formation of this lake still remains a mystery. Although geologists believe that it could be a seismic process, due to some disturbance or upheaval, the water below the ground came to the surface. Spread across a width of just over a hectare in size, its depth is estimated to be between 18 and 20 meters. It is located almost 25 kilometers from the city of Gafsa. According to experts, due to a minor earthquake, there would have been a crack in the rock above the groundwater, and it would have shifted from its place, causing millions of cubic meters of water to rise to the surface.
The news of the lake in the middle of the desert spread like a fire and gradually people named it "Lac de Gafsa". People were quite amazed how suddenly water appeared on that barren land where there was a terrible drought a few months ago. Although the local administration had warned not to use its water and said that the water of the lake can be poisonous and harmful to health. Because when the lake was discovered, it was of clear turquoise-blue color and later turned slightly murky green, indicating that the fresh flow of water has stopped and water has now stagnated. Experts believe that this change in the watercolor can be due to phosphate and there are fears the water might contain radioactive residue. Due to the high phosphate content, swimming in the lake is challenging.
However, even after a warning from the authorities, people could not stop themselves from enjoying the lake water in the scorching heat. There are still many rumors about the origin of the lake as some were calling it a miracle, while others were calling it a curse. But despite this, now this mystery lake has become a beautiful tourist sport along with joining the strangest places in the world.
