You might be aware of Grunion fish that usually have two types, the California grunion, and the Gulf grunion. Grunion fishes residing in water are as wonderful to see, their behavior is equally unique. We often hear that fish never leave the water, but this fish is proof that there are exceptions to every rule, and this exception is found on Santa Barbara Beach in California. In fact, on this beach, in spring and summer seasons, the rising flood of Grunion fish is seen. Grunion are known here for their unique mating ritual which is observed every year in the months of February through September. Every year at times of very high tides, Grunion appears on the sandy beaches entirely out of water where they dig their tails into the sand to lay their eggs.
Females lay between 1,600 and 3,600 eggs during one spawn, with larger females laying more eggs. The males then wrap themselves around the half-buried females to secrete their semen to fertilize the eggs buried in the sand and left to incubate. The female fishes then also return back to the water leaving the eggs on the seashore. For the next 10 days, the grunion eggs remain hidden in the sand. After this period is over, the eggs hatch and the young grunion are swim back into the ocean, making the process of reproduction complete. These Grunion spawning events are also called Grunion runs. During this, many predators also try to catch these fish, but grunion unites in such a huge amount that it is very difficult to catch their movements.
