If you like to travel in the mountains, then just keep a safe distance from this terrible witch, named Yama-Uba. Japanese people also call it "The Mountain Witch" and its story is quite scary. Yama-Uba (Yamauba) is a terrifying witch from Japanese folklore, who according to the legend lives in a hut in the mountains and kills anyone who passes through her path, be it an animal or a human. She is a ferocious witch with long hair and creepy eyes who wears tattered clothes and looks downright disgusting. But as she's a witch, this appearance is quite normal for her, and she loves to eat human flesh. But Yama-Uba was not a witch earlier, there is a long story behind it.
According to the story, Yamauba was formerly an ordinary old woman who lived in a small village in Japan. But one day the village experienced a dreadful famine which caused a shortage of food in the area. Yamauba's children also no longer wanted to feed her as the food had become insufficient for the demand. Because of this they threw her out of the village and left her in the woods to die of hunger. But this didn't kill her as she made her way into the mountains and took shelter in a cave.
Due to being alone for so many years, she gradually became insane and turned into a cannibal. She made a small hut in the woods and started hunting travelers for survival who got lost in the mountains. It is said that Yamauba assumes the form of a beautiful maiden to lure its prey. She shelters the victims in her hut for the night, but once they fall asleep she brutally kills them and eats their flesh.
Yama-Uba is commonly seen wandering the mountain roads of Japan and whenever travelers go to the mountains for trekking, she sometimes disguises herself as an old woman to help them. Now because the travelers are more tired, they take the help of Yama-Uba, but later she takes them to her hut and treats them very well. She provides them with food for the whole day and takes good care of them but as the night approaches Yama-Uba reverts to its true form. Then it is usually impossible for travelers to leave Yama-Uba's hut as she uses some dark spell of black magic to trap them and eat them alive.
