The traditional story states that Lord Shiva beheaded Ganesha in anger and at the request of Mother Parvati, Shiva breathed life into Ganesha with the face of a baby elephant. But there must always be a question in your mind that where the real severed head of Ganesha would have fallen. In all the temples of Lord Ganesha around the world, the elephant's head is attached to the body of his idol, but you will be surprised to know that the real head of Ganesha still exists in a cave. It is believed that when Lord Shiva beheaded Ganesha, he kept his severed head in a cave known as Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave Temple.
However, the head is now not recognizable as it is covered in a layer of limestone or in idol form. This cave is located at a distance of about 14 km from Gangolihat in the Pithoragarh region of Uttarakhand. The cave is about 90 feet inside the hill, covering many mythological stories of Lord Shiva and Ganesha. Situated at an altitude of 1,350 m above sea level, the cave is 160 m long and 90 feet deep from the point of entrance. Patal Bhubaneshwar is not just one cave, but a series of numerous underground caves.

It is described in Skanda Purana that Mahadev Shiva himself resides in Patal Bhuvaneshwar, protecting the severed head of Ganesha, and other gods and goddesses come here to praise him. Just above this Shila Rupi (rock-like) head of Lord Ganesha, there is a rock like Brahma Kamal with 108 petals, from which drops of divine water keep dripping all the time. The main drop is seen falling into the mouth of Adiganesh (portrayed as Ganesha with a human head). According to folklore, the Brahmakamal was established here by Lord Shiva. The temple is visited by thousands of people every year, worshiping this unique form of Ganesha.
