There is no dearth of people in India who believe in ghosts. But there is no doubt that going to such places sometimes makes you feel that maybe someone is calling your name or you see some strange figure. Sometimes the shadow appears and disappears, and sometimes it seems as if a spirit has passed near you. Where Bengal is famous for its beauty, there are no less places that are famous for being haunted. So let's know about two such places in Bengal where ghosts reside.
Writers' Building
A combination of awe with history can be felt in the Writers' Building of West Bengal, as this building is believed to be haunted for hundreds of years. Talking about its history, the building was designed by Thomas Lyon in the year 1777. During British rule, the writers and junior clerks of the British East India Company used to work in this building. From 1947 onwards, it was used as the office of the Chief Minister of West Bengal. The watchmen and security staff have always considered Block 5 of this building as haunted, which is located on the first floor.
According to them, they cannot go alone in block 5 at night due to fear, as strange noises can be heard from there, such as windows closing and opening on their own and typing sounds coming from locked rooms as if someone is busy working late at night. Painful voices of some people can also be heard, seeming like they are in deep trouble. Apart from this, sometimes such sounds are also heard as if many soldiers are marching. In the 1970s, an account was published in the Calcutta daily newspaper regarding Munshiram, a night guard of the Writers' Building during that time.
While patrolling the building at night, he entered the first floor and saw a white man there who had emerged from the Central Despatch Office. He was badly injured and disappeared down the staircase. Munshiram told that some other shadowy figures were also present there, and he could also hear the sounds of heavy boots coming up the staircase. Seeing this scary scene, he immediately fainted. It is said that this spirit is of Colonel Simpson, who was Inspector General of Police during that time, notorious for treating Indian prisoners like animals.
December 8, 1930, three revolutionaries named Benoy, Badal, and Dinesh reached the Writers' Building and murdered Simpson, since then Simpson's spirit is seen wandering there at night. Visitors claim to hear Simpson's voices several times even during the day as if someone is laughing out loud.
Putul Bari
There are also some other haunted places in Kolkata like Putul Bari, also known as House of Dolls. It is said that in earlier times this building was inhabited by babus, who were very powerful and took advantage of their power wrongly. They raped young women and murdered them at this place and no action was taken against them. Consequently, the place became haunted by the tormented souls of women.
Also, on the top floor of the building, there was a room for a little girl who used to play with dolls. In no time, her obsession with dolls grew so much that she filled the entire room with dolls. Don't know if that girl had a mental illness or was possessed by some other negative power, but soon she lost her life due to unknown reasons. Since then, Putul Bari has become haunted.
