Why does the Tajmahal remain gloomy at night and has had no lights for generations? This question is the most asked question related to the Taj Mahal and its answer is also a little mysterious and a bit logical. The Taj Mahal is such a marvelous structure that everyone wants to feel its grandeur very closely. This stunning marble monument was completed entirely in 1653, until then electricity was not even invented. That is, from the time of its construction, it was designed in such a way that only natural light could provide enough illumination to rise up its beauty. Not only this, but on a full moon night, one can see the Taj in all its splendor.
While constructing the Taj Mahal, it was specially kept in mind that this building would shine in the light of the moon. Therefore, if artificial lighting is installed in the Taj Mahal, its natural beauty will be lost. The building was constructed from translucent white marble stones brought from Makrana, Rajasthan, in which the light falling in the moonlit night would provide enough illumination in the structure. But when the government attempted to install lights around the existing pond outside the Taj Mahal, all the lights were shattered on the first night itself. Another attempt was made to install lights, but as before, the lights were shattered again. After that, the government never made any effort for this.

Since the Taj Mahal is a mausoleum, housing the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal, no electricity has been provided inside it. Moreover, it is a marble structure and can be seen in all its glory at natural night. So it is absolutely unwise to illuminate it with artificial light.
