They are usually described as having fairly friendly and moral behavior, but this is not always the case. Because there is also a legend of such a mermaid in Nevada's Pyramid Lake which is not friendly at all. The area around this lake has been home to the Paiute Tribe for centuries. According to legend, a long time ago this lake was occupied by a mermaid, who was quite well-mannered and used to interact with tribe members.

Over time a tribe member became friends with that mermaid and gradually this friendship turned into love. Now both started meeting every day and soon decided to get married, but it was not possible at all. The tribe people were against this love affair because they could not include any other creature other than humans in their community. The head of the tribe decided that the mermaid should go back to the lake and never contact any tribe member again. The mermaid was very saddened by this decision and her grief gradually turned into anger, due to which she started drowning the tribe members one by one in the lake. She would take the fishermen underwater and that would have cost them their lives. It is believed that even today, there are reports of hundreds of people disappearing in the lake every year, who never return.

Not only this but the legend of water babies is also found in this lake as it is heard that in earlier times the tribe members used to drown unwanted deformed or premature babies in this lake. Slowly the spirits of these babies gathered in the lake and they started haunting it. Many have heard the sounds of babies crying or laughing coming from the lake. Therefore, the locals also believe these water babies to be the reason for the people's disappearance, and at the same time, some even claimed to have seen a mermaid swimming in the lake, who were not even familiar with the history of the lake.
