Just as tales of demons and a variety of paranormal beings are found in different parts of the world, similarly American and European folklore has the stories of Banshee. Banshee is a female spirit who usually appears like an old and scary woman, but she can take the form of a beautiful young woman whenever she wants. She made its abode in rivers and any place where green life grew from the water. The sighting of this spirit is considered a bad omen, usually foretelling of a death or a disaster. She is known as a woman who wails outside a home to warn of the imminent death of a family member.
In European culture, it is believed that if someone sees Banshee, it is a warning that one of their family members will soon die. In Ireland and Scotland, the tradition of Keening is quite prevalent, in which female family members would cry and wail over the deceased after the body had been laid out. So it is believed that if someone sees or hears a banshee scream, it indicates that death is imminent for him or any of his family members. It has also been heard that the banshee often takes the form of a bird and sits in people's windows. She keeps sitting there without moving for hours or even days and leaves only when someone dies in the house.

Various sightings of the banshee have been reported, in which she is seen in different forms, even taking the form of an animal. Sometimes she looks like a scary witch, and sometimes she turns into a washerwoman or laundress, who washes clothes on the edge of the river. In Irish folklore, she is portrayed as a beautiful young woman who seduces men and kills them. She is fair in complexion, has long hair, and is usually seen in a white or grey gown. But according to some, the banshee is not evil, as she neither brings nor causes death. She simply warns people about death and signals them to be ready. So she should simply be seen as a desperately sad observer telling about what is certain to happen in someone's destiny.
