The Gawkadal Bridge is an old bridge located in Srinagar, counted among the most haunted places in Kashmir. During the day the area looks very calm and beautiful, but at night it unfolds its darkest history, a horror that the locals may never forget.
On January 21, 1990, a group of people was protesting against the troops to fulfill their demands, believing that they were taking the wrong advantage of their powers. But as the group entered the bridge, the officers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) started open firing on them. Until someone could understand anything, the dead bodies of people piled up on the bridge. This massacre is described by some as "the worst massacre in Kashmiri history". From that day onwards many paranormal activities started taking place on the Gawkadal Bridge.
The bridge is believed to be haunted by the angry and anguished spirits of people who died an unfortunate death during that protest. The trespassers have claimed to see many unknown shadows and spirits roaming on the bridge at night along with hearing strange voices. Sometimes some people even felt as if someone was following them, but as they looked back there was no one. Some have also witnessed such spirits which disappeared in front of their eyes.
Sometimes you may find a spirit asking for a lift, and sometimes suddenly there are voices like hundreds of people are screaming in pain. Knowing its history, such speculations can be made, but many tourists have also reported paranormal activities on this bridge, who had no idea about its history. Due to its ghostly reputation, it would not be wrong to call this bridge as one of the most haunted places in the region of Jammu and Kashmir.
