There are many such objects found in the world that are believed to be possessed by some curse or evil spirits and which can be capable of changing someone's life completely in an evil manner. Today we are going to learn about one such cursed object which is actually a chair, not a normal chair but a very mysterious and creepy wooden chair which is known by the name "Busby's Stoop Chair", or the "Dead Man's Chair". This cursed chair was said to be haunted by Thomas Busby's ghost. To know about the origin of this curse, we have to step back into history.

Thomas Busby was a violent person who resided in North Yorkshire during the 17th century. He was a drunkard, a stealer, a thug, and a person that no one liked. He was single and spent most of his nights with prostitutes. There was another man named Daniel Awety, a friend of Thomas Busby, who was just as criminal-minded as him. In fact, even before meeting Thomas, Daniel happily carried out his criminal scams across the city. But after Thomas married Awety's daughter Elizabeth, they bother became business partners in criminal enterprises.

Thomas usually visit a pub every day where a chair was his favorite, as he often sat in that chair, but if someone else used that chair, Thomas did not like it. Once Thomas reached the pub as he was already drunk and found Awety sitting on his favorite chair, which filled him with anger. On the other hand, Awety was also very upset about some matter that could’ve been regarding Elizabeth or their illegal activities. And when Thomas sees Awety who threatens to take Elizabeth away from him, he becomes even more aggressive and violent, which ended in Thomas physically forcing Aweti out of the chair.

This caused tension between the two men which eventually turned into a heated argument. The fight between the two escalated and Thomas brutally killed Awety, who was demanding his daughter return home with him. Soon the police get informed about this incident and Thomas was arrested. As a last wish before being hanged, Thomas had his last dinner and booze on this chair. And after finishing his meal, Thomas cursed that anyone who sat on that chair would suffer an untimely death.
Since then the chair is believed to have been possessed by the curse and spirit of Thomas. From that day onwards, all those who sat on that chair, could not survive. Due to the many deaths attributed to people sitting in the chair, the pub owner donated the chair to the Thirsk Museum, where it was hung a few meters above the wall so that no one could accidentally sit on it.
