Whenever we talk about an evil nun, the first name that comes to our mind is "Valak", the nun featured in the movie "The Conjuring 2". But in the history of England, there is one such case where a girl's spirit reputedly haunts the Bank of England, as well as the area of Threadneedle Street, and over time people began to call her by the nickname "The Black Nun". So who is this black nun and is its story true? Let's try to know the full story through this article.
The story dates back to the early 19th century when a man named Philip Whitehead worked in the cashier’s office at the Bank of England, located in London’s Threadneedle Street. In the year 1811, Philip was caught in some scam in the bank and he faced many charges like theft and forgery. In those days these crimes were taken very seriously and for such crimes the offender would be punished with death. Philip had to undergo several trials for his crimes and was sentenced to death in the first month of 1812. Philip also had a sister named Sarah, who knew nothing about Philip's legal issues. Philip told Sarah before his death sentence that he was going out of town for a few days for his bank work.
After Philip's death, Sarah waited for a few days, but when he did not return, she went straight to Philip's bank. Upon reaching the bank, she asked the employees working there about his brother Philip. But no one there wanted to tell Sarah that her brother was no longer in this world, so they repeated the same lie to Sarah that he had gone out of town for bank work. Sarah agreed to them, but the very next day she again came back to the bank and started asking people for her brother's address. Everyone again told the same lie and then Sarah started visiting the bank regularly and started asking about her brother. She wore a long black dress every day, with a full black veil covering her head. Wearing that spooky black attire makes her look similar to a nun.
Sarah's bank visits continued like this for several days and one day after getting frustrated, a bank employee told her the truth that her brother was no longer in this world as he had been sentenced to death. Knowing this truth, Sarah was completely broken and had an instant mental breakdown. This sudden shock was quite enough to send her into denial and madness. She seriously became mentally ill and day after day she would visit the bank wearing the same black clothes asking staff if they had seen her brother. Many people even started thinking of her as mad, but the staff in the bank had a lot of pity on Sarah's condition and they always helped her by giving some money. Seeing her in black dress regularly, people around the bank started calling Sarah as "The Black Nun".
But gradually Sarah’s behavior was turning into aggression, as she now started fighting with the bank employees and asking everyone for money. But after not getting the money, she used to create some trouble in the bank every day, thereby diverting the attention of the customers and employees. Tired of these circumstances, the bank officials made an agreement with Sara, under which the bank would give her a sum of money, in exchange for never setting her foot in the bank again. The bank decided of giving the money because they had hidden the truth of her brother's death from Sarah for many days and they had a huge regret for this. Sarah accepted the deal and was never seen around this bank again.

About thirty years after this incident, Sarah died a natural death and her body was buried in a plot to the rear of the Bank of England. But a few days later, some people saw Sarah near the same bank and also found her wandering in the area of Threadneedle Street, randomly asking passersby if they had seen her brother. It seemed that after her death, Sarah freed herself from the contract she had made and was no longer bound to her oath. Initially, the city police felt that maybe someone was deliberately wearing such clothes and trying to frighten people. But this suspicion turned out to be false as many people even saw her disappearing before their eyes. Astonishingly, Sarah Whitehead was once seen by American travelers who didn't know anything about these stories. They said that the black nun was asking them about her brother and when they refused, she shouted loudly at them and disappeared in the air.
Many people passing through that area claimed that they have seen the black nun but she does not harm anyone, rather just asks about her brother. There is a subterranean passageway of Bank Station nearby Threadneedle Street where Sarah has been seen several times. Even this place has a terrible history where a bomb was dropped in 1941 and around 19 civilians were killed. Experts believe that there are many more spirits present at this place, which belong to the people killed in that bomb blast.
