Rainbows are usually caused by rain droplets present in the atmosphere, occurring after the sun's rays fall on them. Similarly, there are millions of hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere at altitudes of more than 20,000 feet, and sunlight refracted through these ice crystals causes a ring with a radius of approximately 22 degrees to form around the Sun. In simple words, the halo phenomenon occurs when light is reflected and refracted by ice crystals and split into colors due to dispersion. Sun halos are visible through cirrus clouds, which are thin, detached, hair-like clouds that form very high in the atmosphere, usually over 20,000 feet.

It is not necessary that halos are formed only in sunlight, sometimes the light of the moon also creates halos at night. The process is the same, when visible around the Moon, it is known as a moon ring or winter halo, occurring when the moonlight is refracted through the millions of hexagonal ice crystals present in the cirrus clouds of the atmosphere.
