The tales and legends of this most popular divine female spirit are quite famous in Indonesia, known as the Queen of the Southern Sea or the Goddess of the Ocean. She was known by the name "Nyai Roro Kidul" or Dewi Kadita. Regarding her origin, Nyai Roro Kidul was a beautiful princess from the Southern Sea island of Indonesia dating back to the 16th century, whose name was Kadita. During that time she was liked by almost everyone as she was considered quite intelligent, genuine, and kind-hearted. But gradually some members of the royal family started getting jealous of her. As a result, she was struck by the black magic cast by a witch under the orders of a jealous rival and this caused the beautiful princess to undergo a hideous skin disease.
Her father called the best healers from around the world to cure his daughter's skin disease but nobody could know what this disease was. One by one they all tried, but nothing worked for her. One day Kadita got fed up with her condition and jumped into the violent waves of the south sea with the intention of killing herself. But the sea demons and spirits saved her life, and they brought back Kadita's beauty by curing her disease. They even broke the spell cast on her and bestowed upon her many powers and crowned her as the legendary Spirit-Queen of the South Sea. Since then it is believed that she rules the South Sea.
She is usually depicted as a mermaid, but she is capable of taking any form. Kadita is generally known for killing the evildoers and helping the good ones. Sometimes she appears in front of people taking the form of a beautiful young female and sometimes taking the form of an old lady. Usually, sailors going on that route had to face Nyai. If the reports are to be believed, that spirit takes the life of sailors who visit the sea in the greed of treasure, but many times she has even saved the lives of good sailors trapped in a shipwreck. There are thousands of "Nyai Roro Kidul" movies and paintings made in Indonesia and even today people wish for the blessings of this spirit.
