Whenever we try to get acquainted with any civilization, we learn about their lifestyle, customs, food habits, spiritual practices, and culture as well as some of the myths and legends associated with that civilization. In the history of our Earth, many developed and mysterious civilizations have come and destroyed, during which many mysterious creatures also existed. One such civilization was the Maya civilization, a mysterious civilization considered to be highly advanced, which thousands of years ago developed the science of astronomy, calendar systems, hieroglyphic writings as well as pyramids, mystical temples, palaces, and observatories without any metal tools. Furthermore, during the Maya period, many fantastic beings emerged, and as time progressed, their existence resulted in the rise of several mythical creatures. In today's article, we are going to talk about one such mystical creature which was present during the Maya civilization.
This creature from Maya folklore, known as the La Xtabay, is extremely mysterious and mystical. Actually, La Xtabay was a female demonic spirit that probably still exists today, and was considered so special because she did not fall into the category of a creature, but a female demon who became extremely powerful after her death. Different people describe it in different ways, some people consider it a "forest witch", and some consider it the goddess of the forest. In fact, La Xtabay dwells in dense forests, and she is seen in its very beautiful form wearing a white dress, with long black hair covering her shoulders. She lures men with her seductive beauty and kills them. This is the reason why the people of the Maya civilization considered La Xtabay to be an evil spirit.

A story from the history of Xtabay has always been told in folklore. It is said that there was a small village in the Yucatán Peninsula, where a girl named Xkeban lived. She was the most beautiful girl in the village, but still, she was treated poorly by her community for her promiscuous behavior and belittled whenever possible because they thought that she had kept sexual relations with many men. Whatever the truth, Xkeban always helped the needy, and the sick and took care of the animals, and fed them.
But one day, Xkeban went missing for several days, and thus, the townspeople started looking for her and found her dead body guarded by animals and surrounded by fragrant flowers. The homeless poor, and needy people, whom Xkeban had helped during her life, held a funeral for her. After performing the last rites, the sweet-smelling fragrant flowers grew around her grave, and people took the incident as a sign from God that Xkeban was not wrong, but they misunderstood her. But after her death, she had turned into a powerful demonic spirit.

Mayans believed that when Xtabay lured men, it was their state of mind that decided whether they would survive or not. She used to seduce men from behind the ceiba tree, which is considered a sacred tree in the Maya civilization. For those whose mind was free from lust, Xtabay makes their life happy by being pleased with them. But for those who had lust in their hearts, she first fulfilled their lust by taking them deep into the forest. Once they have had sex, the Xtabay then transforms into a poisonous snake and devours them. Xtabay has been seen from time to time not only in the Maya civilization but even after that. In the year 1998, Jesus Azcorra published a book, in which he wrote about Xtabay and also mentioned the experience of seeing it.
