Australian Aboriginal people have documented this creature in history, as they have described it as a giant water monster with sharp teeth, which is a man-eater as well as a plant-eater. Talking about its early accounts, William Buckley was an Australian escaped convict, he wrote his biography in the year 1852, in which he described many sightings of this creature. Buckley's account suggests he saw such a creature several times in Lake Modewarre, which the natives call Bunyip. He says, it is a dark grey or black creature, whose body is covered with fur. He even narrated an incident about an Aboriginal woman who was killed by Bunyip. According to him, bunyip was believed to have supernatural powers.

In the 1930s, a group of railway workers heard some strange howling sounds near the New South Wales Southern Highlands, causing them to flee in horror, believing it to be bunyip, coming from the swamp. They said that this noise was so loud and powerful that even the bottle kept next to them started vibrating. From time to time many people have shared different stories of their experience of seeing this creature near a lake or river, or any other water body.
