In summer our body remains wet with sweat, but have you ever noticed that throughout our entire body, the lips are the only part that never sweats. This is because the lip part does not have sweat glands at all, as a result of which they don't become wet in sweat and even they don't secrete oils either, and this is the reason why our lips also dry out quickly.
However, if there is a lack of water in the body, then its effect starts appearing on the lips immediately. Lips become dry due to not drinking enough water as when someone remains dehydrated, their lips are more prone to dryness. Even B Vitamins deficiency can cause dry and cracked lips, and apart from this, the cause of chapped lips can also be iron or folate deficiency.
Another additional fact is that the skin on our lips is very delicate and thin as compared to other parts of the body. That is, the skin on the rest parts of the body can be up to 16 cell layers thick while the skin on the lips is only 4 to 5 layers thick, resulting in blood vessels being more apparent, causing the lips to appear pink or red in color.
As you age, your lips start thinning. The reason is that with aging, collagen production in the body starts decreasing. Collagen is the most abundant protein that is essential for building tissue, is produced naturally by the body, and is responsible for skin elasticity throughout the body.
In addition, the lips contain millions of different nerve endings, which makes them one of the most sensitive parts of the human body. Being densely packed with numerous nerve endings, the lips react intensely to all kinds of stimuli, which, in turn, arise a tremendous response in the brain. In fact, even the slightest stimulation of the lips excites a greater part of the human brain than genital-sexual stimulation can. This is the reason why even the slightest touch of someone's lips will start giving you more sensual arousal or excitement. Hence, while expressing love to each other, lips play an important role in kissing and intimacy.
