On the holy bank of the Godavari river lived a brahmin named Shvetmuni or Svetmuni who was an ardent devotee of Shiva. He was always absorbed in the devotion of Shiva, but when the time of his life was complete, the Yamadutas (messengers of death or agents of Yamaraja) came there to take him away. But when they tried to enter the cave where he lived, they could not enter his abode as their body was unable to move inside, and because of this, they had to stand at the entrance of the cave waiting for Shvetmuni to come out. It is said that when the Yamadutas started taking Shvetmuni forcefully from there, the Ganas of Shiva appeared there to protect Svetmuni.

Then somehow Yamaduta Mrityu Dev tried to attack Svetmuni, but Bhairava (a fierce form of lord shiva) was also there, who was protecting him. It is believed that Lord Shiva, pleased with the chanting of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, had sent Bhairava Baba to protect Shvetmuni. Bhairava asked Yamaduta Mrityu Dev to return, but he did not listen to Bhairava. Being bound by religion and responsibility he threw a noose on Shvetmuni. Seeing this attack of the Mrityu Dev on the devotee, Bhairava attacked him with a stick, leading him to death. Hearing the news of Mrityu Dev's death, Yamraja became very angry and came himself and attacked Shvetmuni, but Bhairava was already present there, who was protecting Shvetmuni. As a result of which Bhairava attacked the Yamaraja and killed him. In this way, Yamaraja, the god of death also had to face death. Seeing the son dead, Suryadev worshiped Lord Shiva, and then Shiva revived everyone.
