Hardly some of you would know that even after the head of a cockroach is cut off, it remains alive for about 9 days? But now a question must be troubling your mind that can this really happen? The answer is yes. So let's try to understand this interesting fact about cockroaches in a little detail.
How can any creature remain alive after beheading, like how would it breathe? The simple answer is that cockroaches do not remain alive due to any miracle or magic, but their body has a specialty. In fact, cockroaches do not breathe through their nose, rather, there are many small holes in their body known as Spiracles, through which, they are able to breathe and remain alive even after beheading. A total of 10 pairs of spiracles are found in the body of an adult cockroach.

Also, the cockroach body consists of many small structures called ganglia and these ganglia act as a small brain in the cockroach's body and controls the movements of muscles, mouth parts, wings, and legs. That is, even after the head is cut off, all the parts of the cockroach's body can work properly.
Unlike humans, cockroaches have an open circulatory system and they don't have a large network of blood vessels like humans, or small capillaries through which you need a lot of pressure to get the blood flowing. So when you cut off their heads, often their neck just seal off just by clotting and there's no uncontrolled bleeding.

Now another question arises, why do they die after 9 days when they do not need to breathe through the nose? The answer is hunger. A cockroach can live without food for one month, but will only survive one week without water, so when a cockroach is beheaded, it lives for 8 or 9 days and after that, it dies due to thirst.
