Everyone might be familiar with the term "Laser", a device that is currently being used in many fields or applications, and even many people would have been using a little laser in their homes too. Basically, it is a device that amplifies light by the use of stimulated emission. Like visible light it is not found in nature, it is obtained by stimulated emission.
Light travels in the form of waves and each wave have a wavelength. The light coming from the sun appears white in color, which is actually a mixture of seven colors, and these seven colors combine to form white light. Each color has its own wavelength and different energy, which is why white light is scattered in different colors after dispersion, such as violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.
On the other hand, Laser light is a narrow beam of light, in which all the rays have the same frequency and wavelength and travel in the same direction. This light is monochromatic and all the rays emanating from the source are in the same phase, so this light is focused on only one point after leaving the source and traveling in a straight line. Hence, this makes it possible to send it over long distances. Apart from this, due to no deviation, its intensity is very high as compared to normal light.
How Dangerous Are Lasers To Airplanes?
The problem of people pointing powerful lasers at airplanes may lead to dangerous consequences. It is quite necessary to know that the commercially available laser pointers emit a small beam of light, but as the distance increases, its diameter increases, and if it is inserted into one's eye, it will cause temporary flash blindness for a few seconds.
When you point a laser at an aircraft, a flash may appear on the windshield of the aircraft, putting the pilot in a risky position, as well as endangering the lives of many people. These laser pointers can be incredibly dangerous because not only do they reach a high level but can also endanger or distract the pilots by preventing them from performing many critical tasks. As the laser beam hits the cockpit windscreen, the light spreads with greater intensity and distracts the pilots. Sometimes, it can also cause temporary flash blindness and afterimages, if powerful lasers are put into use.
In the past few years, laser attacks on aircraft have been on the rise in many parts of the world, with over thousands of cases of pilots being targeted by lasers. So if you are also thinking of doing this somewhere unknowingly, then know that doing so is not legal at all, because it is a punishable offense or an illegal act. According to US federal law, it is a crime to shine lights like this on an aircraft since February 2012.
