Who doesn't know about Alexander the Great or Sikandar? He was a man who dreamed of ruling the whole world and for this, he conquered most of the world just at the age of 32, making his name counted among the greatest rulers of ancient history. He was the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia but despite being the king for less than 13 years, he changed the course of history and was undefeated in battle. He created one of the largest empires in history, stretching all the way from India, through Egypt up to the northern border of Greece.
Alexander's fear was in the people of the whole world to such an extent that he wanted to keep his terror forever among them and hence wanted to make himself immortal. Meanwhile, Sikandar had heard from somewhere that such herb is found in India, which increases the life of people. With this intention, he was coming towards India, when he was suddenly met by a sage meditating at a place. Sikander asked the sage, from where should I get the herbs that could make people immortal. He said you tell me about it, I will give you money in return.
The sage smiled and said, suppose you are thirsty and you are standing in the desert, and you do not have even a single drop of water, so what can you give me to drink a glass of water? Sikandar said I can give half of my entire wealth or property for water. After hearing this the sage said if I still do not agree, then? Sikandar said, then I will give you all my wealth, all my kingdoms because without water I will not survive.
Hearing these words from Sikander, the sage said, the cost of a glass of water is invaluable compared to the wealth you have accumulated throughout your life. So why don't you understand that what you are fighting for all over the world is an aimless act, the reality of life is only death because whoever has come to this earth has to go back one day. You have only given pain to others in your life and only earned people's hatred, so you have to go to hell. He also made aware Sikandar that he was going to die soon.
A few days later, Alexander was caught by a dangerous disease that brought him close to death. Upon learning of the truth of death, he expressed his desire to send a message to the world. He requested his generals to fulfill his following three wishes.
1. Expressing his first wish, Sikandar said that all the Hakims (physicians) engaged in his treatment would carry his body alone so that the world would know that even the Hakims who cure people’s illnesses cannot defeat death.
2. Then expressing his second wish, he said that all the wealth (gold, silver, and precious stones) that he had accumulated throughout his life should be spread on the path leading to his grave, so that everyone would know that when death comes, then all this wealth cannot be of any use.
3. And expressing his last wish, he said that both his hands should keep dangling out of the coffin so that people would know that a person comes to the earth empty-handed and goes back empty-handed.
