How a small mistake of engineers ruined a skyscraper. Here we are talking about the Millennium Tower, the tallest residential building in San Francisco, with 58-stories above the ground and 419 luxury condominium units. The problem started to occur in 2016 when everyone started hearing various loud cracking and popping sounds from the walls of the building. Consequently, when everyone checked the building from outside, it was found that the building was sunk into the ground and tilted to one side, due to which the window glasses of the upper apartments of the building were broken.
The building was actually opened to residents in 2009 and during its construction, there were no such problems were noticed. But while constructing this building, the engineers inadvertently made such a mistake that the building started sinking into the ground. According to experts, the tower's poor foundation led to the sinking and tilting of the building. The foundation of the building is a slab of concrete built on concrete friction piling into the mud fill and sand, and this foundation type may also be known as a floating pile foundation which is generally not recommended for such large constructions.
