Nokonoshima island of Japan is situated near Fukuoka city where tales of mermaids are quite famous. Sailors claimed to have seen mermaids on this island since ancient times. It is said that when fishermen used to go fishing in this area, they usually encountered with "Ningyo", which was often depicted as a little monster with pointy-toothed, and sometimes even sporting claws or horns. Ningyo is a name specifically given to evil mermaids in Japanese folklore, as the mermaids living in this area were profoundly evil and were responsible for killing people. These mermaids always tried to seduce the fishermen by their tempting voice or excessive attraction power, and the fishermen who got caught in their trap were usually killed by them. Tales of Ningyo around this island were quite common in the past, but as time progressed, their sightings gradually diminished.
According to legend, on April 14, 1222, the dead body of a mermaid washed ashore on the Japanese island of Kyushu. After which a shaman declared that this body of the mermaid brought good omen for Japan, as a result of which the bones of this mermaid were placed in the famous Ryuguji temple of Japan. Even today these bones are kept in this temple, which has been researched by many people. The mermaid relic present in this temple is not the only evidence, but even earlier, a mermaid's body was found on the beech whose bones were kept in the Fujinomiya temple, near Mount Fuji, which is still present there. In Japan, it is believed that Ningyos still existed around this island, and their sightings are considered inauspicious, which is a sign of natural disaster.
