On November 16, 1966, such a piece of news was published in a local newspaper in West Virginia titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something" that terrified the local people of Point Pleasant city quite badly. In fact, according to this news, some residents of Point Pleasant city claimed to have seen such a supernatural ten feet long-winged humanoid creature, which looks like a mixed form of a human and a bird. This supernatural creature was later known as "Mothman".
The Mothman was first seen by five gravediggers a few days before this article appeared. According to them, a human-like demon was flying over them, which had huge wings and was making sounds like an eagle. A few days after this incident, two young couples filed a report to the police that while traveling in a car during the night, they suddenly saw a huge grey-winged creature like a human in front of their car, whose eyes were "glowed red". When they tried to escape from this creature by driving their car back, even then this humanoid creature kept following their car for a long-distance by flying.
After this human encounter with the Mothman, for the next one-year many people in the city of Point Pleasant claimed to have seen this strange creature, and the mystery of this mysterious creature was getting deeper with each claim. Regarding this, author John Alva Keel told in one of his interviews that during the year 1966, including the people of the whole city, he himself faced a very scary period called Mothman. But at the same time, some of the people who encountered Mothman also said that during this period they did not feel that he wanted to harm them in any way, rather it seemed as if he was trying to talk to them.
Soon this scary and mysterious story of Mothman comes to an end on December 15, 1967, when the Silver Bridge of the city suddenly collapsed, in which 46 people died painfully. This was the highest number of people killed in a bridge accident in American history. Before the accident, some people claimed to have seen the Mothman over the bridge, and surprisingly, the Mothman was never seen again after this accident. During this 13-months period, when Mothman was terrorizing the city, about 200 people in the city of Point Pleasant were seen experiencing these strange events.
Well, some people like John Alva Keel were quite sure that this strange creature was an alien because during this period the activities of UFOs and aliens were at their peak in many parts of America. Regarding Mothman, biologists say that it must have been an extinct species of bird called "Heron", not some kind of demon, which has a wingspan of about seven feet and red color around the eyes. Apart from this, some intriguing incidents related to Mothman also point towards the birthplace of the Mothman. According to some witnesses, Mothman was seen several times around the abandoned munitions plant of World War 2, known as "the TNT area".
Before World War II, this place was used as a bird sanctuary, due to which some researchers said that Mothman is a mutation bird, which became like this after getting infected with the radiation and chemical present at this place. Clearly, no one knows what the Mothman actually was. But today in Point Pleasant city culture, and through the many books written by John Keel and the 2002 film "The Mothman's Prophecies," the Mothman is probably still alive today. Now the people of Point Pleasant city host the annual Mothman festival since 2002, seeing that it seems as if the scary history of Mothman has now become a reason for celebration for the people here.
