This wonderful and magical lake named Chandratal is a crescent-shaped lake in the hilly areas of the Lahaul and Spiti mystic valleys of Himachal Pradesh (India). In the Mahabharata period, Devraj Indra, riding on his chariot, descended in this lake to take Yudhisthira along with his body to Svarga Loka.
Somewhere, this sacred lake is also associated with the fairies as there is a legend that this crescent-shaped pristine water body is an abode of Fairies. According to the legend, fairies descend from Swarga into this lake on moonlit nights, which many people have claimed to see. The story of a shepherd in this area is quite famous, who was married to a fairy. This shepherd after finishing his work every day, would sit on the bank of this lake and keep talking to the moon for hours while looking at it. During the time while his attention remained on the moon, a fairy used to come to the lake regularly for taking a bath. The fairy would see him sitting there every day talking to the moon and perhaps seeing his simplicity, she was fascinated by him.
