It is known to all that healthy sleep is very necessary for every individual, otherwise, this condition might become quite worst for the person who is lacking in sleep, which may even lead them towards their death. But what would happen if your sleep becomes the enemy of your life, that means even a little sleep may cause you to die. This may sound a bit strange to you, but it is actually possible for some people, who suffer from a disease called Central hypoventilation syndrome. In fact, it is such a disease in which a person has to stay awake all the time, otherwise, he would not wake up, if he slept by mistake, meaning he would die. In this disease, a person's brain actually forgets to inform the body during sleep that breathing is actually a necessary process for survival. This sleep-related disorder is also known as "Ondine's curse".
This sleep-related breathing disorder can either be congenital (CCHS) or acquired (ACHS) later in life. This syndrome was first introduced in 1970 when it is revealed that there is also a disorder, named congenital central hypoventilation syndrome which generally occurs in infants. When the doctors were asked whether this disease can be detected in pregnancy, they said this disease is just beginning to be exposed. According to them, this disorder is usually not tested during pregnancy, but if someone has a family history that a baby has died in their home in their sleep or someone has had this disease, then in that case it can be traced. Although during pregnancy the baby breathes through the mother and the mother also does not face any such problem, then such tests are not done in pregnancy.
Medically there is no treatment for this disease yet, as there is the only supportive treatment available for this. The damaged nerves become unable to provide the necessary breathing during sleep, so a support system is needed. In the early stages, the patient is put on ventilation, and later, such a machine is inserted through a hole in the throat so that the child can breathe during sleep. This is a very challenging task. In this syndrome, the child has to be on the Lifetime Support System. This disease is quite rare and the main reason for its occurrence is genetic, as the genes of the parents pass on the disease to the child. But the worst thing about this disease is that the child does not show any symptoms of it.
