Have you ever thought that whenever we get injured or sprained or a part slightly cut somewhere on our body, we usually feel pain, but on the other hand, when we cut our nails or hair, why do we not feel any pain? The answer is nerve cells are present everywhere in our body, helping in sending or receiving signals from the brain, resulting in the ability to feel any kind of pain. But our nails and hair are made up of dead cells, due to which nerve cells are not present there and for this reason, we do not feel pain while cutting nails or hair.

These dead cells are also called keratinocytes and despite being dead cells, they grow through the process of keratinization. In this keratinization process, new cells push the old cells ahead of their base, allowing the nails and hair to grow continually. But you should avoid the pink part of the nail which contains various blood vessels and nerve endings underneath, which can cause enough pain to you.
Another important point is that our hair is completely made up of dead cells whereas this fact does not fully apply to nails. You must have noticed that we do not feel pain when we cut the upper growing nails, rather we feel pain only when the nails which are attached to our skin are cut or hurt. This happens because only the grown nails are made up of dead cells but the nails which are attached to the skin are made up of living cells and this is the reason why we feel pain when they get hurt or injured.
