Eisriesenwelt is actually the largest ice cave in the world, making it the most spectacular wintry world of ice. The word Eisriesenwelt means the world of the Ice Giants. The place is located in the mountains of the Alps near Salzburg, Austria, and the entire cave is about 42 km long. The cave was first officially discovered in 1879 by Anton Posselt. Before Posselt's discovery, the cave was known to the locals, but they never explored it as they believed that it was the entrance to hell.
Stepping through the 20 meters wide and 18 high entrance of this grand cave, takes you to a fascinating world of Ice. The ice palaces of crystalline beauty made numerous efforts into enhancing the impressiveness of the cave. The reason behind the formation of ice inside the cave was thawing snow that flowed into the Eisriesenwelt and froze. Throughout the year the entrance to the caves remains open, resulting in chilly winter winds blowing into the cave, making the snow inside freeze, and during summer cold winds from inside the cave blow toward the entrance, helping the formations to be prevented from melting.
The guided tour is available here for the first section, about a kilometer in length, but it is very important for you to be fit to roam here because you have to climb 1400 steps here. Along the way, you will also find huge ice formations and frozen ponds, and maybe you will find yourself frozen too, but it will be lots of fun. Today the cave is successfully receiving around 200,000 visitors annually. Thanks to these fascinating ice sculptures on the site, for earning it the honor of being one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Salzburg.
