It happens with many people that when they wake up, saliva is dripping from their mouth, which makes them feel very uncomfortable i.e., feeling awkward or embarrassed. Many people also start thinking that whether they have any disease or not. But in reality, drooling is a very good sign for your health, but how? let us tell you this fact. This is a sign that you have rested well and slept very well, that is, drooling during sleep occurs only when you are in deep sleep. So don't worry if you drool while sleeping, as it is quite normal.
But excessive salivation while sleeping can sometimes be a matter of concern, which is also known as hypersalivation or sialorrhea. This problem is most often seen in little babies while they are teething or who have a muscle or nerve problem such as Cerebral palsy. Salivation of the mouth generally occurs due to a gland that produces more saliva while sleeping. During the day, a person manages to swallow saliva, but due to the relaxation of the nerves in sleep, the saliva starts flowing directly out of the mouth.
Several factors could be responsible for the production of excessive salivation, such as being allergic to foods and certain medications that cause excess saliva production. Even if someone has an acidity problem, saliva can come out of the mouth while sleeping. Scientists believe that gastric acid is caused by acid reflux episodes. This stimulates the esophagus which helps in making more saliva in the body, resulting in drooling while sleeping.
This problem can also occur due to sleeping in the wrong position, as while a sleeper lies on their back, the saliva automatically goes into the body through the throat. But for the side and stomach sleepers drooling is quite normal as the gravity is more likely to pull saliva down toward the mouth, causing salivation from the mouth.
Another responsible factor could be Tonsillitis. Tonsils are fleshy pads located at each side of the back of the throat, in which inflammation can occur due to Tonsillitis. Swelling causes narrowing of the passageway in the throat, in which saliva does not flow down the throat and starts flowing through the mouth.
