Everyone must have noticed the option of airplane mode in their mobile, which would have been turned on by mistake many times. Almost everyone knows that airplane mode is basically turned on during the flight, but why it is done so, probably very few people might know about this. But what if someone forgets to put their mobile on airplane mode or flight mode during their flight journey? Will it be harmful to the airplane or cause any other problem or even cause it to crash. So let's know the complete science behind this about how would it affect the plane in such a situation and why it is compulsory to turn on the flight mode during the air journey.
Normally, turning on flight mode benefits a group of two people, one the pilot and the other you, the passengers. But how? so what actually happens is that when the plane takes off in the air, the pilot starts to get signals and communication from the air traffic controllers, which usually guide the plane, and that communication takes place in the form of radiofrequency. The pilots have to keep the headphones on, so they can listen to the instructions from the control tower. So suppose if a person in the plane turns on his mobile, then the SIM of that mobile will start scanning the mobile tower on the earth to check for the mobile signal. And this scanning will start interfering with the connection built between the pilot and the air traffic controllers on the ground.
As a result, it will begin to break the connection, causing the pilot to hear a noisy and annoying sound in his earphones instead of the clear voice of a person sitting in the air traffic control room. Now if all the passengers on board the plane have switched on their mobiles, the pilot's earphones will start to get such a disturbing sound that he will not be able to get instructions from the air traffic controllers. Thus, he wouldn't know what the weather was like ahead, and whether any other aircraft were flying ahead or not and whatever necessary information he was getting from the control tower would be stopped.

Therefore, the ground control tower (Air traffic control) plays a very important role in the safety of the flight so that it can stay safe and fly in the right way and go in the right direction. So if the phone remains switched on while in-flight, it will try to constantly search the signal from the nearest tower on the ground. Mobile phones usually operate on significantly less power on the ground, however, as you move further from the cell phone tower, your phone's power must increase in order to communicate effectively.
Another disadvantage of this would be that the heating of your phone would increase even more, as the phone is always looking for a signal, which will drain the battery for no reason and disturb the signal for the pilot, causing trouble for him too. This is the reason that while traveling on the plane, there is a rule to turn on the flight mode in the phone, otherwise, the plane will not be safe at all and your mobile battery will also start draining so fast for no reason.
