It has already been said that money can buy everything, even one's body, but can money buy one's mind? Perhaps all the sex workers of India who are engaged in this profession will answer this question very easily, but do you know how prostitution started in India? Prostitution is considered to be one of the oldest professions in Indian history where Devadasis used to be an earlier version of prostitutes, where they devoted their whole life to God. Devadasi literally means God's (Dev) female servant (Dasi). Some people also believe that a Devadasi never used to get married considering God as her husband and later she also started to call by the name of "bride of the town". She was usually invited to dance and sing in the home of wealthy families and this devadasi or city bride was always respected by all. No men, even kings, and Mughals were ever looked at those women with lustful eyes and they always were treated in a very respected manner.
But if we look at Indian history back in that time, the British authorities are responsible for destroying this culture, as soon as many states went under the control of Britishers, they started asserting their rights over everything. Those city brides also had to perform in front of British officers and officers were attracted by their beauty and since then the culture of one-night stand started. Britishers used to take Nagar Vadhus or City brides for sexual pleasure and later the meaning of prostitution in India changed completely. During the late 16th and 17th centuries, some parts of India were under Portuguese, and then Japanese women were captured and brought to India as sex slaves. Along with this, the British military elements had made some such areas across the Indian subcontinent, known as brothels, where only sex workers were kept.
Gradually these areas developed in many parts of India and then many rural Indian women and girls were brought here who were paid for giving sexual pleasure. Now the most important question comes whether prostitution is legalized in India? You will also be shocked to hear the answer because the answer is neither yes nor no. Prostitution itself is not punishable in India, but activities related to it such as red-light areas, forcibly bringing girls here, and atrocities on them, all are punishable due to laws. According to the Human Rights Watch Report, there are more than 20 million sex workers in India today and around 35 percent of them are under the age of 18, which is a very disgusting thing. Till now strict laws have not been imposed against this crime in India and due to which the number of sex workers is increasing, due to which innocent girls and women have to suffer a lot.

There are two important laws against prostitution in India, the first is the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 and the second is sections 372-373, the Indian Penal Code. Both these laws have been made to stop the atrocities committed on sex workers, but still, the rights of sex workers are not being protected, and due to which the demand to legalize prostitution is increasing with time. There is a huge industry of prostitution in India and most of the women entered here because of poverty. So the solution here is that girls and women should be provided education from an early age so that they can earn money in the right way and lead a decent life.
