We have talked about many such mysterious ships in some of our past articles that are notable mainly for their enigmatic behavior and unexplained mysteries, such as the Ourang Medan and Spanish Galleon San Jose. Today again we are going to talk about one such mysterious ship which started its journey many years ago but could never finish it and even today this mysterious ghost ship remains visible to many other ships in the sea, named Flying Dutchman. But the sight of such a cursed ship in the sea is such a bad luck that no one wants to face. It is believed that the appearance of this ship is a bad sign, till date, whoever has seen this ship, something bad has definitely happened to those ships and their crew members.
On 11 July 1881, King George V was traveling along with his brother Prince Albert Victor, in the ship named HMS Bacchante. During their voyage, near the Australian sea at about 4 o'clock in the morning, they saw a strange bright red light in the distant sea and then suddenly a ship appeared in that red light, but a few seconds later both the lights and the ship disappeared from there. About 13 people on their ship at the time witnessed the process of sudden appearance and disappearance of this ship. The people on the ship had already realized that they had just seen something mysterious but that cursed ship was the Flying Dutchman, they were not aware of it. They came to know this fact later that morning when they heard the news of the tragic death of the crew member of HMS Bacchante, who had first seen that ghost ship. They were now fully convinced that this had happened because of the sighting of the Flying Dutchman. The Flying Dutchman, which at one time had its terror over the entire African sea, and the terror was also in such a way that even before the voyage started the ship's members used to pray that perhaps the weather would be clear during the voyage. Because it was believed that during bad weather people could see this ghost ship flying in the air. It has also been heard that some very serious and devastating incidents had happened to someone who saw this ship. Many such mysterious sightings of the Flying Dutchman have been claimed by different people to date.
The novelist Nicholas Monsarrat, in his novel "The Cruel Sea", claimed to have seen this ghost ship in the pacific ocean during the Second World War, when he was posted as a Navy officer in the Royal Navy. A German submarine also claimed to have seen this ghost ship during world war 2, and similar claims were also made by the inhabitants of Capetown in South Africa and ships traveling along the Cape of Good Hope. But no one knew where this ghost ship came from and where it disappeared. Many believed it to be a myth and many considered it a scary truth, but no one has been able to make a solid claim of what the real truth is. But how the Flying Dutchman ship came into existence and what was its history, different versions of this story are found in different places. But according to a common belief, the Flying Dutchman was actually a vessel whose captain's name was "Hendrick Van der Decken", also known as Dutchman. In 1641, Captain Hendrick Van der Decken took his ship and departed from Holland to the East Indies for a business voyage, and while they were returning home after his successful voyage, on the way, Captain Hendrick made some changes in the route and ordered the ship to be diverted towards the Cape of Good Hope.
The crew members were extremely unhappy with the captain's decision as they wanted to return home as soon as possible, but the captain did not listen to anyone and ordered the ship to continue towards the Cape of Good Hope. But unfortunately, later, the ship was confronted by a terrible storm, which destroyed the ship, and eventually, Captain Hendrick, his ship, and crew members were swallowed up by that dreaded sea. Captain Hendrick was considered the real culprit for this tragic tragedy. The curse of those crew members made this ship a damned haunted ship that always wanders in search of the shore. Apart from this story, many other stories about the ghosting of this ship are popular among the people. No matter what the real story behind this ship being cursed and horrified, but those who face it have the same consequences.
Contrary to these concepts, if the sighting of Flying Dutchman ghost ship is seen from the point of view of modern science, then these mysterious sightings can be understood by a physics phenomenon, called Fata Morgana, which is actually a mirage. Mirage is a kind of optical phenomenon in which light rays bend via refraction to produce a displaced image of distant objects or the sky, which causes the visual illusion. Fata Morgana is also one such mirage in which such optical illusion is formed due to the varying air temperature of the sea surface and the bend of light on the horizon of the earth as if a ship is far away, but in reality, there is nothing. But this theory of physics still fails to explain what is the real reason behind the death and madness of the people who see the Flying Dutchman. So can there really be any truth in these incidents involving the Flying Dutchman or is it just a series of coincidences? Is Flying Dutchman really a cursed ship or just a minor physics theory? No one has an accurate answer.
