You must have heard many stories related to past lives and reincarnation, some of which you may have called a concoction, and some have been considered true. Today we are going to talk about one such incident, after listening to which you will be a little shocked. Not only you but also Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi once came into doubt as to whether this story is actually true or not. This story is all about an Indian woman named Shanti Devi who claimed to remember her past life. To know this case in-depth, Mahatma Gandhi also conducted an investigation agency and when the report related to it was published in 1936, then people came to know the whole story of Shanti Devi and her reincarnation.
Shanti Devi was born in Delhi and when she was just 4 years old, she began to be troubled by memories of her past. She told her parents that her real home was in Mathura where her husband lived. She told such shocking things about her village in Mathura that no one could believe because at the age of just 4 when she had not seen his village properly, how could she tell about the village of Mathura in such detail as if she has grown up there? But when her parents ignored these things, she ran away from her home at the age of six to reach Mathura. After returning home, when she was admitted to the school, she stated to everyone that she was married and had died ten days after having given birth to a child. And when her teachers and other school children were asked about this topic, everyone said that she usually spoke in the regional language of Mathura and repeatedly divulged her merchant husband's name "Kedar Nath".
After this incident, the headmaster of the school found a merchant by the name "Kedar Nath" living in Mathura, whose wife Lugdi Devi died nine years earlier, ten days after having given birth to a son. Kedar Nath and his son were invited to Delhi, where they were presented by different names in front of Shanti Devi, but she recognized them immediately as the family of Lugdi Devi. Shanti Devi told "Kedar Nath" about many such incidents, after knowing that he became convinced that she was indeed his wife in the previous birth. When this case came to Mahatma Gandhi, he set up an agency which was entrusted with the responsibility of investigating this case.
Subsequently, the investigating officers along with Shanti Devi went to Mathura on 15 November 1935 where they had to deal with many strange incidents. Shanti Devi recognized everyone there, all the relatives of Kedar Nath and Lugdi Devi, including the grandfather of Lugdi Devi. Shanti Devi said that when Lugdi Devi was about to die, her husband made a number of promises to her which he has not fulfilled yet.
The committee constituted in the investigation concluded that Lugdi Devi has taken second birth as Shanti Devi and is indeed the reincarnation of Lugdi Devi. Shanti Devi remained unmarried throughout her life and to prove herself, she gave several interviews. She gave her last interview just four days before her death on 27 December 1987, in which she described the pain of Lugdi Devi when she was in the last moments of her life.
