Perhaps in childhood, all of you must have heard a story, in which anything was thrown into a well, it turned into gold. Well, it was just a story, but in reality, there is a well that owns similar properties, but this well does not turn things into gold, but it does turn them into stone. In the city of Knaresborough in North Yorkshire, England, there is a well called petrifying well, which is characterized by the fact that whatever is put into this well becomes a stone after a period of weeks or months. The petrifying well is located inside a cave known as Mother Shipton’s Cave. The cave is named after a local woman, Ursula Sontheil, who believed to be a witch and better known as Mother Shipton. But she also gained the popularity of a prophetess as she had the god-gifted ability to predict the future. She predicted several events such as the invention of iron ships, the Great Fire of London in 1666, and the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The story of Mother Shipton gave petrifying well a terrible reputation, but in another legend, the well was also believed to have magic healing powers.
In this well, people have performed many types of experiments, dropping everything from a teddy bear, hats, and a cycle to other random items and as usual, everything became stone after a few months. Earlier, people believed it to be a result of magic or witchcraft and some also believed that this is a cursed cave and if they touch the water of this well, they will also be turned into stone, but there is nothing like that as this phenomenon involves some different reasons. When the research was done on it, the mystery of this well was revealed. During the research, it was found that the amount of mineral content in the waters of this well is very high, and due to the process of evaporation and deposition taking place, everything from small to large objects in the well appears to turn into stone, as they are covered by solidified minerals.
