The Solar Ark located in Japan is one of the largest solar buildings in the world. This amazing structure is an ark-shaped solar photovoltaic power generation facility, constructed by Sanyo, a Japanese electronics company. This 630 kW solar-collecting building is 315 meters long and 37 meters high and has over 5000 panels that produce approximately 530,000 kWh of energy per year. This beautiful science structure is located in Anpachi, Gifu Prefecture, in the geographical center of Japan. Its amazing design was inspired by the vision of an ark embarking on a journey to the 21st century. The building's impressive construction material helps give the impression of the solar ark being suspended in the air. The weight of the actual body of the ark is 3,000 metric tonnes excluding pillars and is constructed from structural steel.

The Arc is capable of resisting winds of up to 34 meters/second and level 7 earthquakes on the Japanese scale. There are, in total, 75,000 red, green, and blue computer-controlled LEDs between the individual solar panels that are activated at night to produce images and words across the ark. The ark is surrounded by 5-meter high water fountains and two ponds, each with their own cascade. The total length of the Solar Ark is 315 meters and it is 31.6 meters tall from the center of the structure.

There is a Solar Lab stationed at the center of the Solar Ark, which is actually a museum of solar energy. The Solar Energy Museum is also an exhibition center that mostly provides information about solar energy. The solar lab is divided into ten zones that provide a wide range of activities for visitors, including a solar system simulator, an artistic approach to the sun, an adventure wall, and a solar library.

In August 2011, the red Sanyo logo on the Solar Ark was replaced with a blue Panasonic logo, as Panasonic acquired Sanyo and it became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Panasonic.
