All the beauty here does not only exist on the ground surface of the park, but it also exists below its ground level in the form of subterranean limestone caves. There are three types of caves here: Kotumsar Caves, Kailash Caves, and Dandak Cave. Where the Kotumsar Cave has been much discovered biologically, on the other hand, Kailash and Dandak Caves attract attention due to stalactite and stalagmite formations. The Kotumsar Cave is a subterranean limestone cave which is about 35 meters below ground level. The main tunnel of the cave is nearly 200 m long with several lateral and downward passages. This limestone cave was discovered by locals around 1900 and was explored in 1951 by a renowned geographer, Shri Sankar Tiwari. It is one of the most famous caves in Chhattisgarh as well as in India. The Kailash cave is situated at an altitude of 40 meters above the ground and 250 meters long. There is a huge stalagmite formation in the shape of Shivlinga at the end of the cave. The hollow walls of the cave make incredible musical sounds when struck by hand. Another incredible feature of the park is Darhas (water pools). One of the famous ones is Bhainsa Darha that has crocodiles and tortoises and has a very hygienic quality of water. The watchtower situated at Bhainsa Darha gives an awesome view of the lake. The perfect time to visit the Kanger Valley National Park is from November to June, after which the caves remain closed during the rainy season.
