Today we will talk about another wonderful site in Peru, known as The Sacred Valley of the Incas, located in the present-day Peruvian region of Cusco. It has been gradually incorporated into the Inca Empire from 1000 to 1400 CE. It is also known as the Urubamba Valley. Tourists coming here get a taste of Inca culture and also get a glimpse of Peruvian history. It is a lovely place with green mountains and is relevant for the Inca Empire because of its fertile lands. From the very beginning of the Incas Empire, the Valley has been used as the main area for agricultural use. The main crops of the area were white corn, coca, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables, which are being grown till date. Its fertile agricultural land makes it one of the most important places in the area.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo and is irrigated by the Urubamba River - also known as the Vilcanota River. It is fed by numerous tributaries which descend through adjoining valleys and gorges, and contains numerous archaeological remains and villages. During the journey, you will appreciate the cities of Urubamba, Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Chinchero, and Yucay, because in all these places there are pre-Hispanic archaeological ruins that were built by various Incas.

A great variety of animals are found in the area such as deer, the vizcacha rodent similar to a rabbit, skunks, minks, and foxes. Birds like doves, thrushes, goldfinches, and hummingbirds are found in the valley. Several travel agencies in Cusco organize trips to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The Sacred Valley extends over an area of 100 km, Cusco is the closest airport and visitors usually visit Pisac first. Buses are available from both Pisac and Cusco and departs on hourly basis.
