Its regional capital is Florence, which is the most populous city in Tuscany. Tuscany has been home to many influential figures in the history of art and science, and there are famous museums such as the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace.

Among the western coastline of Tuscany, which lies on the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea, there exists a Tuscan archipelago, which is a chain of islands that have the largest island, Elba. The region of Tuscany is almost surrounded and crossed by major mountain chains and with some plains. Hills constitute about two-thirds (66.5%) of the region's total area, which cover 15,292 square kilometers and mountains, a further 25%, or 5,770 square kilometers. The area occupied by plains is 8.4%, which is 1,930 square kilometers, mostly around Arno Valley.

Tuscany is one of the most popular destinations in Italy, the main tourist spots of this region are Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Versilia, Siena, Chianti and Maremma. The provinces of the Tuscany region are Florence, Grosseto, Arezzo, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pistoia, Pisa, Siena and Prato. In the province of Grosseto, there is an ancient seaside town known as Castiglione della Pescaia or Castiglione, which is the most visited seaside destination in this region. Versilia and Val d'Orcia are also worldwide renowned and especially popular among travelers. Tuscany has a large cultural and artistic heritage, which has been expressed in the churches, palaces, art galleries, museums, villages and piazzas of the region.
