As we all know, Himachal Pradesh is well known for its amazing hilly areas and various holy places. It is also called Dev Bhoomi or the Land of the Gods. Manikaran is one of the most famous sacred places in Himachal Pradesh, which is notable for its hot springs and its beautiful landscape. It is located in the Parvati Valley on river Parvati in the Kullu District. It is at an altitude of 1737 meters and located 35 km away from Kullu. It is a pilgrimage center for both Hindus and Sikhs, and also a center of attraction for its hot springs among the tourists visiting Manali and Kullu. Here a river named Parvati flows, with Shiva temple on one side and the historic Gurudwara of Guru Nanak Dev Ji on the other side. Due to being connected to the river, the atmosphere of both religious places is very beautiful. Along with Gurudwara Manikaran, tourists can also visit the Shiva temple, which was slightly tilted with a strong earthquake in 1905. The intensity of the earthquake was 8 on the Richter scale.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the main person behind the history of Gurudwara Manikaran. Here hot springs in the gurdwara are the main attraction for people. It is a belief that Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh religion, came to this place with his 5 disciples. The story begins when Mardana and the other people felt hungry but they had no food. Guru Nanak sent Mardana to collect food for the langar. Many people donated flour and other needed ingredients for the langer. But the real problem occurred when there was no fire to cook the food. Then Guru Nanak Dev Ji asked Mardana to lift a stone from where he was sitting. When he lifted the stone, the source of hot water started to flow from there. As directed by Guru Nanak, Mardana put the rolled chapatis in the hot spring, but the chapatis started sinking. Guru Nanak then asked him to pray to God saying that if his chapatis float back, he would donate a chapati in his name. When he prayed, all the chapatis started floating. This hot spring still persists here and its hot water is used in making Langar. It is also believed that the water of the spring is supposed to have curative powers.

There is another interesting story related to this beautiful place. According to legend, when the Hindu God Shiva and his wife Parvati were walking in the valley, Parvati lost her mani in the water of a stream. When this happens, Lord Shiva commanded his attendant to find the mani for Parvati. Even after searching a lot, Shiva and his attendants did not get the mani back. Angry by this, Lord Shiva opened his third eye. Seeing this happen, an appeal was made to serpent god Sheshnag to pacify Lord Shiva. When Shiva performed the cosmic dance, the Tandava, Sheshnag surrendered the Mani to Shiva. After getting the Mani back, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were very happy.
