It is situated at a height of almost 4,350m in the Himalayas. It is the world’s highest saltwater lake.
Pangong Lake is 150 km Long and 700 ft to 5 km wide. It extends from India to China and approximately 60% of the length of the lake lies in China. Many mineral substances have been accumulated in the lake due to the snow falling from the hills, due to which its bottom is rising. This lake freezes completely for three months during the winter, on which the car can be run. It is also known for changing its color to blue, green and red at different times of the year.
The lake serves as an important breeding site for various birds, including many migratory birds. The bar-headed goose and Brahmini ducks are usually seen here during the summer. The area around the lake supports many species of wildlife, including kiang and the Marmot. The whole region of Ladakh is full of lakes and rivers. The lake had an outlet to Shyok River, a tributary of Indus River, but it was closed off due to natural damming. Pangong Lake from Leh is a five-hour drive, most of which is on a rough and dramatic hill road. If you have ever decided to visit Ladakh, do not forget to go to Pangong Lake. The beauty it has cannot be described in words. It should be seen, felt and absorbed within yourself.
