The cliffs have 120 metres of height above the atlantic ocean at Hag's Head, which is at their southern end and have a maximum height of 214 metres just north of O'Brien's Tower, which is at a distance of eight kilometres to the north. O'Brien's Tower is a round stone tower near the midpoint of the cliffs and marks the highest point of the Cliffs. It is located a short distance from the villages Doolin and Liscannor. It was built in 1835 by local landlord and MP Sir Cornellius O'Brien.
From the top of the tower as well as cliffs, visitors are able to see the gorgeous Aran Islands in Galway Bay, the Maumturks and Twelve Pins mountain ranges to the north in County Galway and the Loop head in the south. The name of the cliffs are taken from an old promontory fort, named Mothar or Moher, which once stood on the Hag's Head.
The cliffs of moher have very interesting geology and wildlife. The cliffs consist mainly of beds of Namurian shale and sandstone, with the oldest rocks being found at the bottom of the cliffs. It is estimated that 30,000 pairs of birds living on the cliffs representing more than 20 species including Atlantic puffins. A variety of sea life is also exist there which includes grey seals, dolphines, minke whales, basking sharks and sunfish.
