Switzerland is the only country that is witness for having the world's longest pedestrian hanging bridge. The name of this amazing bridge is Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge. This beautiful bridge offers fascinating views of the Matterhorn, Weisshorn and Bernese Alps. It is located in randa and provides a hiking path between the swiss villages of zermatt and grachen. This bridge is a part of Europaweg and has replaced the defunct Europabrücke, which had been damaged by a rock slide. The specialty of this new bridge is that it employs about 80 tonnes of cables, which prevents it from swinging while people walking on it. The bridge is 494 meters long, and 85 metres high above the ground at its highest point. It is considered to be the longest suspension bridge for pedestrian use in the world.
Due to continuous falling rocks, this bridge has been constructed 650 feet below the old bridge and the width of this bridge is just 2 feet. In 2010, due to the falling of rocks, the old bridge had to be closed. This bridge is mainly designed for hikers. Now the hikers who come here do not have to cross the low area of land between hills and climb again after the construction of this new bridge. Warnings are being given on the bridge for beware of rockfall, but that is highly unlikely given the height and span of the new bridge.
On the possibility of lightning in the area, hikers are advised to avoid the bridge. But in spite of this, visitors can not stop themselves to go to this bridge, which offers very beautiful views of the Matterhorn hills.
