Here people whistle in different styles to call each other. The people of Khasi Tribe live in this village. The village is located in Khatarshnong Laitkroh Tehsil of East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya.
It is also known as Whistling Village. Every person in Kongthong village has two names, First, normal name like us and the second whistling tune name. People of the village are called by their whistling tune, instead of calling them by their normal name. For this, whistling tunes are different for every person, and this different method works as their name and identity. It is believed that when a child is born in this village, a new tune is given to him by his mother, and then the child gradually begins to recognize his tune.
There are about 109 families live in Kongthong village. Presently there are around 700 people in the village and each one has different whistling tune. The people of this village make these tunes from nature, especially with the sounds of the birds. The village of Kongthong is surrounded by mountains all around. Therefore, whenever people of the village whistle any tune, it reaches far away in less time. With the passage of time, people are getting more advanced here, Now people started recording their tunes on mobile and used it as their ringtone too.
